Evento “Truth, Law, and Justice in the State of Israel” em Tel Aviv

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the passing of the philosopher Emmanuel Levinas (1906-1995), the goal of the event is to examine the relationship between Levinas’s insights about law and justice and the problems that are on the agenda in Israeli society today. Among them are establishing the truth within the legal system, and, more precisely, the struggle for reducing the status of confession within criminal law.

-Screening of “The Confessions” a documentary by the filmmaker Ofra Bikel, Emmy Awards laureate
-Short video of Vaclav Havel, former Czech Republic president, on his relationship with Levinas’s philosophy at the time he was in prison during Communist regime
-Dr Michael Wygoda (Israel Ministry of Justice) on the status of confession in Jewish Law
-Dr Dalya Tsamriyon Hallak (Peres Academic Center) students’ readings of authentic texts written by people convicted on the basis of false confession
-Yosef Zohar: a reading of his letters to Levinas from Abu Kabir prison.
